Subject: Re: IF Conference In NY 04-10-99 - A Velez Report

Hello All,

Just wanted to report that the IF conference was a complete
success. The speakers were all superb, there was an excellent
turnout, and a good time was had by all. Plus, the weather in
New York was nothing short of glorious the entire day.

It was such a gas for me to get to spend time with guys from our
UpDates list. (Errol you were sorely missed mi compadre!) I got
to spend a little time with Mark Cashman and Gary Alevy and a
host of other folks I have only known via e-mail. Mark asked
sharp/pointed questions of the speakers and the overall quality
of the questions (and responses) was as high as it could be. We
were blessed with an intelligent/thoughtful audience that helped
to bring the very best out of the invited guest speakers.
Without getting into specific detail, it was a most revealing
and informative conference event.

The surprizing and -unchallenged- 'hit' of the conference turned
out to be the new kid on the block, Carol Rainey! :) (She gave a
talk on the stormy relationship of UFOs/abductions, and the way
the media has historically handled the subject. As good as the
other better known speakers were, none rivaled the buzz that
Carols' presentation created. Folks were literally chattering
about it during the break afterwards. Kudos Carol. Like hitting
a home run off the first pitch in your first at bat in the major
leagues! <G>

On a personal note:

I can't begin to tell you how much respect and genuine affection
I feel for David Jacobs, Stan Freidman, Jerry Clark, and my
friend Budd Hopkins. Jerry and Stan both gave intelligent and
informative talks. They are intellectually honest guys and their
presence at our conference (especially Jerry Clark) brough a
needed balance to the offering. (Anyone who gets on Jerry or
Stans case about what they were doing at an abduction conference
is going to have to do it over my dead body! <G>) They were
great, and their contributions are what helped to make the
conference a success in terms of content.

David and Budd both gave excellent talks (I can understand why
Davids classes are so popular at Temple, the guy is bright,
funny, and very sharp. A terrific speaker and fun to listen to.)

Greg Sandow MC'd and moderated the conference with much aplomb
and his usual pure class. I think Greg could make a Saturday
night cockfight in the basement of the local bodega seem like a
first class society affair! He just has real presence, and
elevates anything he puts his hand to far above the mundane.
Greg asked all the right/hard questions during the panel
discussion and I can't think of anyone who would have done a
better or more professional job.

A lot of people have problems with Linda Cortile's case. That's
ok, I don't care about that. I just want to say that I'm proud
to call her my friend, and that there aren't too many out there
who could match her for her courage and gutsyness. She was a
terrific addition to the evening panel discussion. The crowd
loved her and so do I.

Sorry more of my cohorts from UFO UpDates couldn't
attend. Maybe next year! <G>
