Shooting star explanation for UFO sighting

Tuesday 27 April, 1999 (2:27pm AEST)

A particularly bright shooting star has been nominated as the
most likely explanation for reports of flaming objects in the
sky between Sydney and Ipswich last night.

Rob McNaught from the Anglo-Australian observatory says he
expects his network of night cameras to confirm the sightings
were a shooting star, which are also known as fireballs.

National and State authorities say a number of aircraft reported
red flares east of Sydney between 30 and 130 kilometres out from
the coast and there were numerous reports to the water police
and coast guard.

Mr McNaught says the speed and brightness of shooting stars
often lead people to believe they have seen an object crash to
the ground.

No country has notified Australia of any satellite likely to
re-enter the atmosphere.
