Now what kind of an author would I be if gave away the results
of interesting and expensive research on a "free" InterNet
listserve? Some folks [you known who you are ;-)] are laboring
under the assumption that I am trying to convince you or sway
you in some way, when my observations of this list over the last
two years have shown that to be quite impossible. No, I am doing
something else entirely.

I knew full well in advance that several people would hit the
ceiling over the original messages but I was not interested in
the reactions of those people. I was hoping only that the list
owner would keep the thing going long enough to engage some of
the people who don't post. After all, as we know, much
important activity generated by a listserve goes on OFF the
list! This activity is one of the truly valuable things about a
listserve: it can connect people not previously in contact with
each other.

The list owner has been most tolerant of controversy as this
thread has developed and I, at least, owe him a vote of thanks.
I owe my critics thanks as well for clarifying the issues some
of my future readers will have. We don't have to respect each
other to find each other useful; and judging from the names,
insults and drivel my critics have directed at me, it is my
observation that they seem to enjoy a little primal scream
