Look Who's Running Down Dr. Hynek Now!

I'll say one thing for Allen Hynek, his erstwhile friends sure
do one heck of a job of "defending" him! That is, both Mr. Clark
and Mr. Friedman damn Dr. Hynek with faint praise...or praise
him with lukewarm damnation, take your pick. But it's odd. It's
like the "Reagan Defense" that was put up after the Iran/Contral
affair broke into the news and the President was asleep or out
of town when the various deals went down.

All respectable people said there wasn't anything to
Iran/Contra, and the President feigned incompetence or
inattention. But, you know, there WAS quite a bit to it and the
President WAS involved, or in a coma, take your pick.

Do people lie about their activities? Yes.
Do they dissemble? Yes.
Can they fool their friends, especially friends
who have good reason to want to think the best
of them? Double yes.
Will they ignore evidence any way they can when
their friends are involved? Yes.

I look at Dr. Hynek's career, closely, and it's almost funny,
how easily he re-invented himself after the Michigan disaster.
Using his personal qualities he was able to put everyone to
sleep, or rather, nearly everyone. As always, there were many
who preferred sleep, as do so many on this list today. But
perhaps a seed has been planted, a doubt raised. Remember, there
is much on the public record if you simply will look at it.

Does any of this matter? Probably not. That is, the "New
Ufology" is about to put itself, and just about everyone else,
to sleep -- out of boredom -- while the "Old Ufology" reinvents
the same wheel for the fourth or fifth time. By this time it's
all rather beside the point.

All of this is most interesting, in the sort of a sinking
sensational way that a crashing airplane probably gives as it
begins its final plunge.

Thanks ebk, Updates is an amazing resource.
