Sharon, everybody...
The issue here is very simple, I think. But it's worth stating
for those who might be new to the wild and wacky field of
ufology.

The UFO era is now more than 50 years old, and during that time
there have been many, many people who've come forth and said
they knew government UFO secrets. I think I'm right in saying
that not one of those stories has been verified. Quite a number
of them have either been proved false -- in the way that
Stephens' was -- or else have dissolved into a puddle of
contradictions, as the person telling the tale keeps adding
details that don't fit what he said the last time he told it.

Becuase of this, nobody with any common sense -- assuming
they've been in the field long enough to know what the history
is -- can take someone like Stephens seriously, without checking
him out first. If you distribute some kind of UFO publication,
in print or by e-mail, you have a responsibility to do some
basic checking before you spread these stories. Peter Gersten
didn't do this. Some of the stuff Stephens talked about -- the
Norad "fence," for instance -- might be hard to verify if you
didn't have government or military contacts. But as Roger and
others have demonstrated, anyone can check to see whether
Stephens really was a Navy SEAL.

Peter Gersten didn't do this, which in my opinion makes him
irresponsible. He eagerly spread the story, thus giving it
credibility. If he'd spent an hour checking, he would have found
out right away that basic details weren't right, and would have
saved us all a lot of nonsense.
