No one was "throwing the term 'cult'" around or "demonizing a
group's belief system." I merely asked for the list's advice on
good resource material on a subject which I happen to feel is
fascinating and very worthy of research.

If you reread my original post (the start of this thread) you'll
see that I was the first to acknowledge that my query covered a
broad range of topics - sociology, psychology, closed societies,
beliefs systems, and (but not only) cults. These topics are all
related in certain ways (and very dissimilar in certain ways),
and we can only benefit from a broader understanding of the ways
in which belief systems are developed in small groups AND in
large societies.

I would certainly not call this "piddling about." Are you
suggesting that it is not worthwhile to try to understand the
reasons behind such tragedies as Heaven's Gate, Jonestown,
Branch Davidians, etc., and we should only focus on the larger
cults (i.e. mainstream religion)?

While I am certainly not a follower or advocate of any
mainstream religious belief system, I do believe that we could
only benefit from a comparison of both the large _and_ small
belief systems and cults, and that this thread is a worthwhile,
and interesting one.
