Jean van Gemert, Brian Zeiler, and I had a number of run-ins
with Michael Edelman over on Usenet groups like
alt.alien.visitors and alt.paranet.ufo. There were numerous
instances of where Edelman simply invented his "facts" on the
fly. Or to put it more bluntly, the man was a flagrant liar.
I supposed that gives him the necessary qualifications to be a
UFO hoaxer.

Here are a few examples of his lying. At one point we were
discussing Blue Book Special Report #14, the massive statistical
Battelle Institute study of UFO cases for the Air Force. As I
recall, Edelman first claimed that BBSR#14 was called Blue Book
because it was nothing more than publication of a saucer fan
magazine. Later he said it was the comparison of alien faces
from different witnesses. He also claimed to have read it as a
teenager in some 1960's paperback. We continually pushed him to
name the book, since none of us had ever heard of it. Eventually
he claimed to have finally found the book, but again when pushed
could produce no name or author. Then he said he would provide
the information if we sent him $50.

I hope this gives you a general picture. Jean van Gemert can
back me up on this. Or you can go to Deja News archives and look
up Edelman's posts for yourself. Have the barf bag close at
hand.

Edelman isn't alone, as I have seen a number of other debunkers
who also resort regularly to deliberate lying. Many of them are
also obnoxious or verbally abusive in the extreme. (Any names
leap immediately to mind?)

Ironically, like many debunkers, Edelman also claims to have a
scientific background and decries ufology as completely
unscientific. Since when is compulsive lying to make your case
"scientific"?

There is definitely some sort of debunker psychopathology at
work here worthy of at least a PhD thesis or two. Maybe the
doctor dropped them all on their heads when they were born.
