Previously, I had written:

>"My father worked for a local TV station on the remote crew for
>the better part of 45 years. He told me often how police
>officers or government officials had confiscated field tapes

>resist."

Dave replies:

>Now you imply they don't identify themselves, confiscate, and
>basically do whatever they please without recourse.

I think you misunderstand. When I ask if you think these guys
are going to politely identify themselves, I don't mean what
organization they work for; that's useless without actual names.

According to my father, these guys did not always identify
themselves by name; sometimes only the organization they worked
for. Sometimes my father had to make an assumption about the
organization based only on the flash of a badge or the fact that
the person was wearing a police officers uniform. The few times
they did give a name, it apparently turned out to be false or
the individual could not be found within the ranks of the
organization in question. The men may have been frauds, their
identities hidden, or their affiliations kept secret, but their
threats were very real. And that's the real point here.

Moving on, Dave offers:

>If you're not doing something
>illegal you have no reason to fear the govmt and don't have to
>tolerate illegal conduct by any govmt employee, local, state,
>or federal.

I'm sorry, Dave, but I find this impossible to accept.

Here in Houston, a Hispanic man was recently shot 44 times in
the back by 5 police officers at point blank range. One officer
emptied his weapon and actually reloaded. The slain man was
asleep and unarmed. An inquiry found no wrong doing even though
the officers had no warrant and had busted into the guy's
apartment.

On a minimal level, of the 4 traffic tickets I've ever received
in my life, only one was correct; the others bogus. I tried to
fight them and lost. Why? Lack of proof.

I recently was involved in a small claims lawsuit where the
judge refused to recuse himself over a conflict of interest. He
had the courtroom cleared before discussing the matter with my
attorney. BTW, there are no court reporters in small claims. So,
again, lack of proof.

Further, the final judgement was altered and back dated by the
judge to favor opposing council (his lawyer buddy) long after
the judge's jurisdiction had expired. We could prove the
conflicting dates but not the judge's involvement. Why? Lack of
proof.

I could on and on about myself and others I know that received
unfair treatment by law enforcement and the legal system and how
we were left with no evidence to back up our claims, but what's
the point? If you, personally, believe the government is honest
then these things don't count.

Finally, Dave offered:

>We'll have to agree to disagree. The govmt is honest, although I
>may feel some policies are misguided and wrong.

>Some employees on the other hand may not be honest. If they do
>something illegal they SHOULD be fearful just like any other
>individual operating illegally..

I think you are correct.

We will simply have to agree to disagree.

I do not feel the government is honest at all. Most of the
employees probably are, but the decision makers and law
enforcement groups are highly suspect in my book.

Take care,

Roger Evans
