The cartridge load 16 mm cameras were originated by Kodak as a
way to lock the user in to Kodak film, since that was the only
film available in the cartridges. Kodak made a number of
different models of these cameras, and Bell & Howell also made
some. Other camera companies may also have made cameras to
accept these cartridges. They were also easier for amateurs to
use since there was no film threading involved. The military
used them as well, and I have seen some cartridge load cameras
with military markings at photo flea markets now and then.

I did not say anything about unusual pitch of sprocket holes.
The spacing of sprocket holes changed at some point in the 50s
(I have the exact data somewhere) when Kodak went to a new
system to make the holes. It had changed a few times earlier as
well. By using a special guage Kodak can determine the rough
age of film from this spacing.
