I don't think there's any doubt that Mars was "killed" rather
abruptly. I tend to think the impact that created the Hellas
basin did the job, blasting most of the atmosphere into space.
Such a thing would wipe out most life but might be
survivable--especially if you happen to be on the other side of
the planet (i.e. Cydonia).
