One clarification: the map was created in 1513 - long after the
Library at Alexandria had ceased to exist. Piri Reis did
acknowledge that he'd used other, ancient sources to create
his map. Though I'm unsure if they've all been properly
identified.

I agree with you that it is quite sobering to ponder that lost
collection of information.
