Hi Brian,

My recollection was that the source was identified as material
that was last known to have existed in the Library of
Alexandria, which was admittedly centuries earlier. I think that
just about anything we get from this era is going to be
anecdotal, so proper identification is going to be difficult.

Of course, therein lies the rub. If you accept the validity of
the Piri Reis map, then you've accepted an anomaly that _has_ to
reach far back beyond the Library of Alexandria. The alternative
is to accept that it's a clever fake, which in itself is beyond
belief given the detail of the coastlines only recently
