Hi Mike,

I don't have enough `absolute' knowledge to even form an opinion.
However, people I respect and have read in recent years - like
Stewart & Cohen, Barrow, Smolin - seem to think there is no

Why? Because the factors involved: very large distances, very
long time periods, very high levels of technology and
`signalling' attainable by possible advanced groups, when set
against humans' tiny amount of knowledge, humans' short period of
`high technology', and humans' very brief period of reliable
recording (if it yet exists) - mean we can't begin to answer
Fermi's question.

So the question is meaningless to us.

We don't know what to look for and we wouldn't know if we've
seen it.
