I wouldn't claim I could prove that 100% but again, there are
many accounts, mostly of simpler circles, rings, etc. going back
decades and even centuries, long before the phenomenon became
'public' in the late 80s/early 90s.

The similarity of many of these, from various countries, lends
credence to the idea that the phenomenon has existed for a long
time, at least in a simpler form, but wasn't investigated or
recognized the way it is now. These were often more isolated
cases, known and discussed mostly among farmers.

Logically, an unrecognized phenomenon seems more likely to me
than people making many very simple circles in various countries
for no good reason in previous times of no mass media or
internet, etc. Copycat-type hoaxing wouldn't even make much
sense then for those reasons.

I would recommend reading 'The Secret History of Crop Circles'
by Terry Wilson. Oher historical cases, including here in Canada,
have been found and documented since then as well.
