Hello Ed

I commend conservatism. However the flaw in this apparently
down-to-earth statement is that the architects of that
"scientific reality" to which you very properly wish us to defer
do require (for all practical purposes unanimously)
"unsubstantial" phenomena, "other dimensions" and "time warps"
in order to explain the reality of Gildas.

>A little
>dose of scientific reality is needed and a little less magic.

Actually a very large dose of scientific reality is needed.

I agree with your implication that the only possible magic is
science we don't yet understand. But given that no-one yet
understands gravity or quantum mechanics, for example, much of
established physics is practical magic, even for physicists, and
to the bulk of mankind it is more abstruse than the deepest
mystical arcana.

Science is not about settled facts; it is absolutely essentially
a process of discovery and novelty, and the part of it that is
conjectural, exploratory, far from being some sediment of
science it is wise to leave in the bottom the bottle, is exactly
the part that we need to drink if we are to continue as a
species to wise-up.

Now you're right to insist that if the label on the bottle
carries a complete and objective list of hypothetical
ingredients then ancient monotreme civilisations will be there;
but it has to said that they will be a trace constituent,
printed in very small type, and should probably not be
advertised as a main active ingredient.

Sorry if this is a bit of a florid metaphor!
