You have said it succinctly and correctly.

It is a sign of ufology's fundamental immaturity - after more
than half a century! - that the nutty "idea" of
"crypto-terrestrials" is deemed worthy of extended discussion,
while its critics are howled into silence. When I said as much
many weeks ago, when this dreary nonsense started, I found
myself at the receiving end of vituperative attacks from UFO
bloggers with an apparently limitless tolerance for any bogus
speculation as long as the hated and heretical ETH is being
trashed in the process. (One even charged that I am too
concerned about science.) I was more depressed than irritated,
but sad to say, I'm used to that by now.

It's enough to make one ask this obvious question:

If ufology never grows up, if many of its practitioners define
"open-mindedness" as receptivity to any half-baked notion that
comes down the pike, if open-mindedness is a synonym for hole in
the head out of which brain matter is allowed to fall freely,
why bother with ufology at all? Maybe it _is_ the domain of
mindless crackpots.
