Chris,

The Internet is dumbing itself down to a lowest common
denominator of intelligence, just as television was at one point
aimed at an 8-year-old educational level. YouTube is providing a
service and what you're describing have been called "Viral
Videos" that travel by word of mouth to popularity beyond all
reason. The problem is that Internet surfers are mostly looking
for dumb stuff and not science. So are you blaming YouTube for
this?
