Natural Phenomenon?

Subject: Natural Phenomenon?

Does anyone have an explanation for stars that appear to flash
or rotate green and red colours?

I have observed this on a few occasions where a bright star
appears to be rotating green and red colours from the poles. I
have seen this, usually on cold clear crisp winter nights, over
extended periods of time. Is this a known
natural/celestial/atmospheric phenomenon, Maybe related to the
cold nights? Even when observed through binoculars, the
phenomenon persists and is quite clear, even to the naked eye.

Without going into detail about these observations, an
explanation of aircraft is virtually ruled out, either it is
natural or it is something other than fixed wing aircraft.

I find it hard to believe that 'they' would be using the same
navigational lights for port and starboard as we earthlings do.
