Quite so. Plenty of hoaxes there as well, but at least we are
confident that a physical object/effect was imaged (whether it
be a hubcap, etc).

In my opinion it should be the default policy to reject digital
images out of hand. With so many sophisticated digital editing
tools available to hoaxers, it's a waste of time and talent to
analyze such images. Although this particular O'Hare image was
quickly dispatched, the next one might come from some former
Pixar animator with too much time on his hands...

The only exception I can see is if there were multiple digital
images from independent witnesses at different aspect angles, in
which case it is fairly straightforward to establish whether
they are geometrically consistent (and hence a vastly more
difficult hoax).

I would guess that far less than 1% of cameras in use in the
general public are film-type, whereas thirty years ago _all_ of
them were. What had been a powerful and ubiquitous source of
potential hard evidence has effectively been purged from the
face of the earth. A good conspiracy theory or two in _there_.
