From the service provider perspective, there are threats
attacking your systems on a constant basis. The Federal entity
that I work for keeps track of "attacks" that are blocked and
issues reports by their region of origin. The source can be
tracked to an IP, but usually it ends there in many foreign
countries. These "attacks" are measured in the tens of thousands
per month.

One site that system administrators use to gather information is
the Internet Storm Center:

http://isc.sans.org/

This gets technical very quickly, but this discussion needed to
take into account the general threat level involved.
