Bob, Gildas, Gregg, Stuart, List

Thank you for your response.

The Blombos Cave tally stones from South Africa have been dated
at 77,000 years old: they are the oldest example of recorded
counting yet found. The catastrophic Mt. Toba event did not
happen for another 5 or 6 thousand years, about as long as it
has taken us to go from Sumer to the Moon.

The Toba event buried the entire Indian subcontinent and
Southeast Asia under several meters of ash, bringing our species
to the tipping point with an estimated (from genetic data) mere
10,000 survivors left to spawn the rest of us.

We have little evidence of what cultures and technologies were
lost but we do know that during some earlier epoch when sea-
levels were lower an unknown people built a causeway between
India and Sri Lanka, visible in spectacular orbital photos.

We have found submerged cities claimed by rising sea-levels,
have found Harappa devolving from a metropolitan rectangular
grid with covered sewers into a shanty-town jumble while Machu-
Picchu and Baalbeck still defy our technical imagination.

Do the India-Sri Lanka causeway, Machu-Picchu, Baalbeck, the
Sphinx, to name a few, constitute an approximate first answer to
Gildas's question: Where are the traces? What meager resource of
intellect and funding have gone into a serious co-ordinated
search for the big picture? The big picture is buried under ash
and ocean.

Traces of tobacco and cocaine found in Ramses II (and other
mummies) and depictions of maize and pineapples in Egyptian
inscriptions prove regular commerce between South America and
Egypt. The Baghdad Battery from pre-Christian Mesopotamia is a
voltaic cell used to generate electricity, whether for
electroplating jewelry (examples found), religious experience,
or medical treatment is uncertain.

Is the battery another example of the Antikythera Phenomena, the
loss of technology from a cultural memory?

What does it mean when technical skills like sword-making in
Japan, Damascus and Toledo or building astronomical/navigational
instruments are closely controlled by a guild or power elite?

I think I am making an argument in favor of open software and

I share many spam filters with Stuart and attempt to reason only
from what is known, but from all that is known. Bob's timely
reference to Anthroposaurus sapiens is a reminder of how vast is
the question and how varied the possibilities. We stand on the
shoulders of the Sphinx peering into the ash-covered, flooded
