>1608 UFO Aerial Battle

>In August of 1608, people of southern France, from Marseilles to
>Genoa, witnessed a true wave of UFOs, as reported in a chronicle
>of the time entitled, "Discours des terribles et espouvantables

At this link a very short description of the events is
accompanied by what appears to be an eye-popping original
engraving of fiery lenticular discs being bombarded from a
castle wall. But there is no attribution whatsoever either for
the story or the image.

In case anyone gets misled it should be pointed out that the
image is apparently neither original nor an engraving, but is
actually "a free pictorial interpretation of the account of
1608", one of a set of 12 colourful saucer paintings, copyright
by GEOS and Gerard Lebat, which can be seen here

What appear to be genuine images of a 19thC reprint of one of
the original 17thC documents are shown at

with the original text next to a rendering into modern French.
From this we discover that for several weeks there were
apparitions of giants rising out of the sea brandishing horrible
snakes, fighting men and horses, noises like canon fire, flying
carriages ("carrosses") pulled by fiery dragons, and deluges of
blood. An intriguing "flap" of odd visions. Some of them might
be prompted by mirages, or perhaps there was a volcanic eruption
associated with disturbed weather and dust washed down in the
rain? Hard to say, but there really isn't anything here that
justifies talk of "extraterrestrial machines" or "war between
aliens and humans"...
