I just found that in his telephone interview at


in March this year Symington said "where I saw it was just a
little bit north of Lincoln in Glendale in the Valley" and "it
was moving I think to the sort of SSE towards Chandler", which
seems to imply a line of sight roughly SE. The 10:00PM lights
were filmed at ~200 deg from Phoenix, or SSW, more or less
orthogonal to this line of sight.
