On that point alone I don't see any problem at all. Isn't it
possible that Haut was pulling the Sgt. Schultz routine ("I see
nothing!") in order to keep [certain people] from "taking an
interest" in him? If we can agree that something alien was
retrieved and many servicemen were told in no uncertain terms to
keep quiet about it, then I think it's no stretch of the
imagination that someone whose participation--in, at least, a
passing fashion--is a well-established fact might be predisposed
to try to keep interested parties from digging too deeply. Hence
the, "I only signed a press release" statements.

That I have some trouble with.
