I knew Allen Hynek reasonably well and liked him immensely. I
have no idea what the above sentence means. I have never heard
anyone who knew him describe him as enigmatic - or, in any
evidence, any more enigmatic than any other of our fellow human
beings - and some people (e.g., Jennie Zeidman) had been with
him since the early days and had a clear-eyed, unsentimental
view of his strengths and weaknesses.

Allen was straightforward - sometimes so straightforward, in
fact, that he brought criticism and even censure upon himself
(as in his public acknowledgement of a private interest in
occultism, encouraged by Jacques Vallee, whom Allen held in high
- dare I say uncritical? - regard).

The story of how Allen Hynek evolved from skeptic to proponent
of scientific UFO inquiry is well known. The public version and
the private version of how that happened were pretty close to
identical, I can attest from my association with the man, with
whom I had quite a few private conversations.

I also know that Allen was deeply troubled by James McDonald's
bluntly stated criticisms of his slowness to act on the UFO
evidence he was seeing as scientific advisor to Blue Book. In
conversation Allen would come back to McDonald's complaints as
he sought to defend himself long after McDonald himself was
gone.
