One could fill a library with stories about improbable things
that maybe shouldn't happen but do. Military stories would
probably take up a whole wing of the library.

To add to the stories, during the 1989 earthquake in the San
Francisco Bay Area, untrained civilians were assisting firemen
put out fires and pulling out people from collapsed buildings
and freeways. This is something that would never be allowed to
happen under normal circumstances, but these were very abnormal
circumstances and the professional first responders needed all
the help they could get.

In the recent PBS series, The War, they quote George Patton
saying that in war, almost nothing goes as planned, and from the
moment battle begins you are constantly improvising.

I suspect that probably sums up what happened at Roswell, an
unprecedented event where senior officers were continuously
improvising as events unfolded, maybe even grabbing people like
cook Melvin Brown to stand guard. Unlike some, I don't really
find that very surprising or unbelievable. They would have been
shorthanded on regular MPs to cover everything and Brown was a
very experienced, battle-hardened WWII soldier, Bronze Star,
expert marksman in a gun battalion, not 'just a cook'.
