It turns out he's inclined to believe, quite firmly, that intelligent organic life will inevitably be superseded by its own AI creations - and that the 'organics' (like us) will be doomed to either fade away or lead apparently pointless lives as maintained 'dumb pets' of the AIs. That leads him to expect our point of contact to be with an outpost of the AIs, either finding a Matrioshka brain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrioshka_brain or one of many possible smaller, self-repairing, nuclear or cosmic-ray powered and asteroid-based 'deep-thinkers' in space - perhaps acting as monitors or maybe just obsessed with solipsist theorizing (Davies has a thing about mathematics; can't see why - Godel's theorem says that mathematics is merely human, and anyway deeply flawed). That influences his thinking about the "new SETI" objectives and methods - i.e. to primarily look for the 'footprint' of ET rather than expect direct messages by radio. So he's thinking in terms of finding Dyson spheres around stars which are being harvested for energy etc, or tracing waves of mining/colonization by analyzing star spectrums to find which are having nuclear waste products dumped into them as its system is exploited/exhausted. Only halfway through so don't yet know if Davies has examined the further problem of what is likely to be the motivations of an independent AI (apart from self-repair/survival programs). It could be that we'll face (or are facing now) a deeply solipsist AI mind(s) (we'd maybe call it extremely 'autistic') which thinks it's 'entertaining' or even 'educational' to fool around with the perceptions of primitive organics like us?
