Yet Another Fine Mess
by Billy Cox

The backlash to the Obama administration's hack response to the
top signature-grabbing petition on its "We The People" website
kinda makes you wonder what the White House hoped to accomplish
in the first place. The more than 70,000 signatories pushing for
new marijuana laws more consistent with alcohol and tobacco
regulation were rewarded with the same old congealed National
Drug Control Policy broth about "emphasizing prevention and
treatment" and "innovative law enforcement efforts that protect
public safety and disrupt the supply of drugs." So an online
counteroffensive of new marijuana-reform petitions from
dissatisfied customers began popping up immediately after last
week's formal White House reply.

What did the POTUS staff think would happen? That the people
they attempted to empower would take their unrequited grievances
with a condescending pat on the head and just toddle away?

"There's a certain amateurishness about this thing," says
Stephen Bassett from his current digs near Los Angeles. "It's
like they're sorta feeling their way through it as they go."
