From: William Treurniet <wtreurniet.nul> Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2011 23:19:45 -0500 Archived: Sat, 12 Nov 2011 17:56:07 -0500 Subject: Possible Artifact On The YU55 Asteroid NASA recently posted a video of 28 images of the YU55 asteroid. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/news/yu55-20111111.html While stepping through the images, I noticed an unexpected feature. It could be just an artifact of the radar reflectivity, but it's worth mentioning in case it's something more. I posted the original image (left panel) and my minor enhancement of it (right panel) at the following urls. The enhancement was done using the Photoshop Gaussian filter followed by Smart Fix. The latter "corrects overall color balance and improves shadow and highlight detail, if necessary". Actual size: http://www.treurniet.ca/temp/YU55_F19.png Double size is a bit more impressive, in my opinion: http://www.treurniet.ca/temp/YU55_F19dbl.png The frame is about 19 sec into the video. The object is on the left edge of the asteroid about half way up. It looks to me like a pipe with a 90-degree bend after coming up out of the ground. The resolution of the images in the video is 4 m/pixel. If it's real, I estimate the pipe to be about 120 m long before the bend and 30 m in diameter. William Listen to 'Strange Days...
