>What Are These Mysterious Lines In China's Desert?
>Analysis by Benjamin Radford

A correspondent of mine who keeps abreast of defence matters
believes the patterns are simulated city street grids intended
for tests of radar and optical pattern-matching targeting
softtware in new-generation ballistic missiles.

Apparently the Chinese made determined efforts to get hold of
classified terminal-phase targeting software for the Pershing II
as part of developing even better kit for their new DF-21D,
widely touted as a revolutionary ship-killer but suggesting
capabilities that are said to be alarming to US defence planners
across a wider conflict theatre.

It's possible, my correspondent points out, that the grids could
even scale representations of actual city street plans - and it
would be interesting if someone could identify them!
