Hello Joe,

Your wish for a wide-ranging and informative check of 'interest,
knowledge and representation in the population' does you credit
and is entirely admirable.

Calmly looking at the proposal let's see if they plan to a) use
a true cross-section of the population; b) impartially check
interest, knowledge and conclusions about UFOs in the
population:

"Participants are requested for a Psychology dissertation
research study, exploring how our beliefs affect the way we
process new information.

This is a new study which will hopefully develop further
understanding in UFO belief, specifically with regard to some
UFOs having an extraterrestrial cause. Whether you believe, are
sceptical, or are unsure. this study is for you!" -

We can see that the answer is "NO" to both questions.

a) they could more reasonably have divided the population into
i) informed pro-UFO folk; ii) un-informed pro-UFOers
(believers); iii) informed skeptics (debunkers), iv) un-informed
skeptics (disbelievers). Instead they've chosen to class all
who've formed a pro-UFO conclusion as 'believers' (perhaps
hinting at an assumption that "UFOs don't exist"); that's an
agenda to label all pro-UFO folk regardless of the source of
their conclusions.

b) they only intend to "explore how our beliefs affect the way
we process new information". Therefore, given that they have
purposely mis-labelled half of the pro-UFO cohorts as
'believers' (see above), you can only expect further
misrepresentation from _any_ testing under that protocol.

If they continue with that plan then, using my 'test' for
outcomes -

I suggest we will see only a skewed and uninformative set of
partial results lending itself (purposely?) to media
misrepresentation.

Cheers
