Hi David Martin earlier listed several `possible' candidate causes, but like your suggestion, they all have at least one big objection. That is, precisely because they are mundane changes in conditions, many if not most people around the world would always have been aware of identical noises, hearing them at various times throughout their lives. That is not so in this case. A secondary objection, not addressed by anyone so far as I know, is that these strange noises are definitely _not_ `ordinary' noises transported or echoed from elsewhere. They are cyclic, modulated and sustained for long periods - several hours in some cases, and often repeated for same days. Am personally aware that some crude but weird sounds can be naturally generated and carried long distances underground - see www.perceptions.couk.com/metamail96.html#noises re: probable magma flow - but cannot think of any credible natural scenario which would produce such `sophisticated' modulations, at such volume in the open air, over such long periods of time without multiple fadings / attenuations or other obvious alteration or change. Given the apparent absence of any Doppler effect in the sounds, a further exclusion would be any moving point source. Gerald O'Connell http://www.saatchionline.com/gacoc Listen to 'Strange Days...
