Particularly in dim light, and possibly when intoxicated, people report wavering images, something like mirages. That's why I suggested that if a newly-sighted person were to put his/her hands on a "horrible" object, and sense that it's not wavering, it might be possible, over time, to train the brain to see it as a stable shape. That might roll back at least some of the problem. It might then be possible that with stable images, the horror might lessen over time. A little bit like people overcoming phobias.
