I’d always assumed Disney was guilty of grammar crimes. But a little research indicates things took a twist in the middle of last century when J.R.R. Tolkien introduced hobbits and a new plural, "dwarves", to literature. That was pretty much the end of "dwarfs", except for a few scattered pockets of resistence here and there, such as red dwarfs.
