Hi Don, Eleanor, David, Eugene, Kathy and All,

You're all right enough: science says that 'common-sense' rules
- for the most part.

I.e. - although we have to agree with Planck, who said "Whatever
our senses tell us about the world, they do not describe
reality" (paraphrased), even so all experiments say that what we
see is an "average" picture of events and objects; and evolution
shapes life to see enough of that average picture to get regular
lunches (and to mate and escape predators - mostly).

But there's a codicil which can be overwhelmingly important -
enough to temporarily cancel out all the rest. That is, if an
advanced group takes one or more of the small exceptions to the
'average' and shapes those into powerful tools, weapons etc,
then that will seem like magic to the rest of us.

Even so it's hard to believe in a "free lunch" so we can also
expect that use of those amplified exceptions to create 'magic'
effects will be a drain on surrounding reality that has to be
accounted for. I.e. maybe causing local temperature changes, and
the decrease or failure of nearby electro-magnetic fields, which
will also affect humans' electro-chemical bodies and brains and
their perceptions (some of the effects may be long-lasting or
permanent). In addition our crude monitoring devices - cameras,
radar, lab equipments etc - cannot be immune.

So we can and should expect all the apparent attributes of
magic: invisibility, instantaneous travel, thought control etc,
to be temporarily allowed by science. It's just that we don't
know about that science right now.

(As Richard Haines has noted re: UFOs affecting gyro compasses -
ie. control of the inertial field - "We don't know how to do

So, like someone once said - "I'm too much of a (real) sceptic
to disbelieve in anything".
