So, all other things being equal, the plane's automatic system 'thought' that a 20 degree bank to the left was necessary to keep on course. To put that in figurative terms - the gyro-controlled auto- system 'saw' that the shape of its (inertial) surroundings had changed, when all that had really happened was a UFO appearing off the port side. Which, coincidentally was the direction in which the auto-pilot then turned the aircraft. I.e. - the UFO had changed the 'slope' of the universe, at least in its vicinity.
