There is plenty of room for screw ups. If it was the New Mexico National Guard that found the debris and sent out the press release, I could buy it, but instead it was an elite unit composed of handpicked men who were thoroughly indoctrinated to keep their mouths shut. Remember, these were the same folks who dropped the bomb on Japan in 1945. So less than two years later, these soldiers went from being the creme de la creme to a bunch of Gomer Pyles?
