Hello List

Raising that point - at:

http://www.ufoupdateslist.com/2012/sep/m05-001.shtml

I forgot that many folk haven't read the case-histories - [try
Googling "smell, odor, ufo, close encounter" or searching UFO
Orgs databases].

So Jason made the 'supernatural association' in his post

http://www.ufoupdateslist.com/2012/sep/m06-001.shtml

and Steven only tempered that slightly with the 'underworld
association' in

http://www.ufoupdateslist.com/2012/sep/m06-002.shtml

However those slightly esoteric conclusions, while maybe to be
expected of students of arcane matters, are contradicted by the
majority of witness testimonies.

These tend to be phrased in mundane terms with the witness
usually associating any smell/odor with some household or
industrial process familiar to them - i.e. s/he does NOT
directly refer to "sulphur" (probably because few people
knowingly meet with sulphur, unless you've visited the crater of
Vesuvius maybe).

Therefore those witnesses cannot be under the influence of any
supernatural or religious associations with "sulphur/
brimstone", simply because they are not aware of the sulphur
ingredient in their more mundane descriptions - i.e rotten eggs,
burnt cardboard, stink-bombs, bad cabbages etc.

The few exceptions I've found featured witnesses who happened to
work in specialist areas of chemistry who could accurately say
"sulphuric acid" when asked about smells/odors.

However it _is_ true that there's a long and almost hidden
history of the smell of sulphur featuring in accounts of
anomalous events. And that later demagogues and religious
maniacs have incorporated that fact in their various
propagandas.

So one interesting question is: "Which came first - the fact or
the superstition?"

Cheers
