Yet there's another suggestion for where advanced species might 'disappear' to. It had occurred to me before, in a general way, but was recently re-presented in sharper focus in Iain M Banks' latest book - and sadly probably his last - 'The Hydrogen Sonata'. Continuing the theme of evolutionary 'progress' he wrote that many races eventually become capable of entering 'The Sublime' and leaving physical reality altogether.
