Air Force Space Command To Discontinue Space Surveillance System
Sequestration Cited As Reason For The Move

Note: This seems to be opportunistic in light of what is going
to happen anyway; a ploy by which the US military can advertise
the so-called 'gutting' of military spending by President Obama.

FWIW The most visible is the cutting of the Blue Angels and the
Thunderbird performances this year. The public would be deprived
of their appearances at air shows, conveying to the public the
false appearance of the weakening of the US armed forces. In
fact the budget for these two Aerobatic teams each year is
pocket change for the Air Force and the Navy.

However this shutdown heightens the fact that the newer
technology is many times more powerful than what is currently
available. It would be nice to be a fly on the wall to see what
is slipping through the fence.

Perhaps in 25 years the equivalent of a Bob Salas will come
forward with testimony of what they tracked on occasion and
which they could do nothing about.

Sequestration Cited As Reason For The Move

Due to resource constraints caused by sequestration, Air Force
Space Command officials have directed the 21st Space Wing to
prepare to discontinue operations at the Air Force Space
Surveillance System by Oct. 1. Final decisions on all fiscal
2014 budget issues will be made over the next few weeks. By
discontinuing operations, the AFSSS would not be maintained in
operational status; however, equipment will not be removed until
a final disposition determination is made.

The AFSSS sites are operated under contract and the 21st SW has
notified the vendor, Five Rivers Services in Colorado Springs,
CO, that it most likely will not exercise the next contract
option beginning Oct. 1. By de-activating the AFSSS by Oct. 1,
AFSPC would see a cost savings of approximately $14 million per
year, beginning in fiscal 2014.
