The reality is this:

Overwhelmingly, people would not want to figure in a sentence
that reads, "Is ---- a Satanist?"  Whatever your intention, few
would fail to read your question as a form of accusation.

You would have been better off to ask something like, "What is
Vallee's relationship to Anton LaVey?"
