I'd like to express firstly my respect and admiration for Errol.
His task as moderator of the List was no doubt time consuming
and at times frustrating, and produced little reward or
recognition. IAs an administrator of a different list, I know
that I couldn't have put up with the manual intervention
required by the nature of UFO UpDates. Although by no means
perfect, the List has performed a function over the years, and
survived where many similar Lists have expired with hardly
anyone noticing their passing.

I have little doubt that someone will try to provide a similar
service, but in my opinion, such an attempt will be doomed to
failure. Isaac's complaint about duplication of effort and the
perpetuation of known and debunked UFO myths endlessly
circulating in cyberspace will continue to be the status quo for
ufology. Even UFO UpDates couldn't prevent that, and nor can any

Easy access to social media such as Facebook and Twitter are
both an obstacle and a tool for ufology. On Facebook, I see on
an almost daily basis posts circulating myths which people are
all too willing to believe. We really don't need to drink 25
litres of water every day to remain healthy, and lemons don't
really cure cancer. Facebook, blogs, and also personal web-sites
are all conduits through which unreliable or even downright
untrue UFO stories are channeled (sometimes in the sense of
mental communications with aliens) into UFO culture. Those
wishing to deliberately contaminate and distort UFO information
know this, and deliberately avoid forums such as UpDates where
they can be pretty sure they will be challenged. For that reason
alone, UpDates will be sorely missed by ufology.

Best wishes to all for 2014, especially Errol.
