From: Ray Dickenson <r.dickenson.nul> Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2013 01:59:21 -0000 Archived: Mon, 04 Mar 2013 06:49:44 -0500 Subject: AI And Pandora's Box Hello List, A thoughtful article in the UK's `Telegraph' goes into some detail on the Human Brain Project (HBP) which seems to have been underway since about 2005: http://tinyurl.com/aot37zx "Mind of its own: building a human brain A machine capable of thinking for itself and expressing emotion is being developed in Switzerland" Although the article stresses that several breakthroughs will have to be made before the project can even be viable, the writer still felt it necessary to lead off with a re-statement of the danger of a `machine intelligence explosion' which, in the prophetic words of Jack Good, would be "our last invention". In fact, as reported in the piece, last year the Cambridge Project for Existential Risk included that danger - of an AI Takeover - in their short-list for study. And, although the HBP claims to have an ethics division looking at that problem, one member of the Existential Risk group seems to think we may be sleep-walking into a 'Pandora's box moment with artificial intelligence that, if missed, could be catastrophic'.
